  • Inspirations: Deneen Melody

I’m always on guard against creative complacency. When I start to feel comfortable about my craft, I know it’s time to reevaluate what I’m doing. Am I pushing myself to learn new techniques? Am I finding new concepts to explore? These are questions I know to ask in order to promote growth. And that leads us to my next inspiration.

deneen1I became friends with Deneen Melody online around 2010. Deneen had turned to acting after an injury cut her ballet career short and she was making a name for herself in the indie horror scene. With more than two dozen credits on IMDB.com, Deneen has no trouble in finding projects to work on.

I wanted Deneen to do voice work on a new cartoon I was developing but unfortunately, my creative chops were not up to the task of animating the story. We kept in touch and it was amazing to watch her go from indie films to network television on NBC’s Playboy Club.

I’m impressed with how Deneen always pushes herself to the next level, never letting off the creative throttle. After moving to Hollywood, she began training in contortion and aerial arts classes that pushed her body and mind to new heights. These days, Deneen has paired her classical ballet training with neo-burlesque troupe Cabaret le Fey. She takes classic pop culture characters and performs stylish, surreal (and sometimes hilarious!) routines. She is not afraid to try new characters and concepts. Her Jack Sparrow is fantastic.deneen2

Her onstage persona along with her dance training and attention to detail, makes Deneen a stand out performer. Regardless of the long hours, hard work and pain, she is relentless in her mission to grow as an entertainer. That tireless work ethic that keeps her moving forward, the drive to constantly explore, examine and reevaluate herself; that is what inspires me.

If you’re out on the west coast, you can’t go wrong catching one of her shows.  Who knows, maybe we will visit with Deneen in the future.  😀

  • Studio move is done!

Whew, we finally got moved into the new location yesterday.  Yay!  But the downside is AT&T won’t be able to setup the network until the 10th of November.  Boo!  I already have some Suzi’s ready to go once we get back online.

  • Protoculture returns!

All 85 episodes of Robotech are on Netflix! This was a favorite of mine back in the day, when you either had to record the episodes onto VHS, or know someone who did. I don’t think I’ve watched the series all the way thru since the summer of ’85. Guess I know what I’m doing this weekend…

  • Inspirations: Tha True Original Gata Monique Dupree

Tha True Original Gata Monique Dupree is such a unique individual, it’s difficult to describe her in a single article.

    Monique Dupree

Monique has compiled an amazing career as an actress, appearing in over 60 films including American Gangster, Life Support, The Replacements.  Her IMDB listings goes on for miles, which is a testament to her professionalism. While being known as the First Black Scream Queen, I almost feel like that title is too limiting in talking about her talent and experiences.  I believe if she had been born 30 years earlier, she could easily have played in any of the classic Hammer horror films.  I would love to see her in a modern remake of the Karnstein trilogy.

Monique is a constantly evolving creative force with a fearless vision, an artist that continually strives to avoid complacency and pushes herself to learn and test new creative outlets.  Monique is not afraid to take risks, and she learns from the bumps along the way, as evidenced in her work with the House of Hardcore wrestling promotion.  (As a guy who used to wrestle in a local promotion, I know first hand how rough some of those bumps can be).  It’s amazing to watch someone with such ethereal beauty go from fashion shoots to the wresting ring without blinking an eye.  I was lucky enough to get to briefly work with Monique and her husband Anthony St. Thomas (a talented author and artist in his own right!) on my indie horror film project (albeit remotely). It was so fun to work with such a genuine and talented team like the Dupree’s.

Oh, and did I mention that she is also the Mom of 10 children?  That she also performs with a band and sings like an angel? Imagine doing all this work AND raising a family too.  I guess you can tell I’m a fan, but I believe we should point out those rare few that refuse to be pigeon-holed by the world.  The artists that take the uncomfortable risks and show us how to climb out of the complacency that we find ourselves mired in.  I love how she never lets the haters (and man, she draws the haters!) break her down.  She has such an elegant style and grace that you just don’t see from celebrities these days.  I find Monique to be strong yet kind, razor sharp yet gracious, and in general a woman you can’t ignore.

On a more serious note, one that usually gets glossed over in articles like this is the fact that Monique, as an African American female entertainer, faces not only dehumanizing objectification and sexism, but overt and institutional racism in both the industry and society.  While I can’t understand what it means to be an African American woman, I can acknowledge that the struggle is real and has to be incredibly painful.  I served in the Army infantry, built munitions in the Air Force and worked as a bouncer in some of the roughest clubs in Texas. Even after all that, I don’t know if I would have the strength to get out and grind daily for my art like Monique does.  Not when the deck is stacked against me every single day.

It’s not her beauty, not her talent that I admire most. It’s that strength, that never give up, you aren’t gonna stop me and I’ll bulldoze you if you try attitude.  That’s the spirit I want to infuse my heroes with, the belief that we can rise above those trying to pull us down.  That we keep driving on everyday despite the barriers that ignorance and fear throws against us.  No matter what your opinion is on her art or style, her strength and continued grace in the face of such odds, that alone demands respect.

  • Music to create by

So much more than just me banging out images goes into creating a page for Suzi.  I’m lucky to have a very supportive wife, a good workspace and a custom built machine to develop on.  But I think the most important ingredient is music.  I rarely turn on the TV anymore these days, preferring to have music constantly on while I’m doing my thing.

One of the artists (technically a duo) that gets a lot of play is Turboslash.  In fact, most of the upcoming issue 6 is inspired by their single, Deathracer.  It’s not often that I ever pitch anything or endorse a product, but these guys are worth every penny.  Head on over to their BandCamp page and check out their EP.  For 6 bucks, you get some amazing 80’s inspired retro wave.  Give em a listen and if you like em,  drop a few dollars and help them keep making great music.

  • Sunday Science: The computer in a skirt

Katherine G. Johnson, Miriam Daniel Mann, Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Kathryn Peddrew* and many other African American mathematicians served an unlauded, but critical role in getting America to the Moon. These amazing women were instrumental in our early space program, despite having to deal with both racism and sexism. In 2015 Katherine G. Johnson was awarded was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work from missions covering the Gemini and Apollo programs, and continuing on to the Space Shuttle.

Let’s take a moment and recognize how the strength and perseverance of these remarkable women as they did the complex calculations that brought our astronauts safely home.  Thank you, for blazing a trail for future generations of women in STEM.  You are truly unsung heroines!

    * I know there were many other women who were part of the team, and I hate leaving them off.  If you know of other team members, please leave a comment or send me a note and I will get them added here!  thanks!
