Music and Passion: Hand in hand

I love talking about music, especially when it comes to the 80’s inspired style of Retrowave. I’d never heard of this genre until I stumbled across the NewRetroWave channel on Youtube.  NewRetroWave is a network that has the uncanny knack of finding the best in the Retrowave scene, and consistently serves up music that captures the stylish moody passion that was the 80’s. And as a guy who graduated in ’84, they are spot on. NewRetroWaveI mean, check out that logo! The sense of dedication to the style and spirit of the music is what makes this passion driven collective so special.

80posterNRW is also expanding to include retro gaming and comic reviews. Did I mention they have some awesomely cool 80’s styled shirts and art available?

Spoiler: When the Suzi animated series comes out, you can bet NRW will be the guys I go to for the soundtrack.

Over in my sidebar, you will see the Radio Cosmos playlist, which features a ton of great NRW gems. If you’re a fan, check them out, and if you’ve never heard of Retrowave, give it a listen, you might like it 🙂

    “Home, Parker”

Sylvia Anderson, pioneer of puppetry and a trailblazer for women in entertainment, has passed on.  She leaves behind a legacy that will outlast many of you reading this today.  With a degree in sociology and political science, she worked in the US for several years as a journalist before returning to the UK and eventually joining AP Films with her husband Gerry.  The BBC has a nice article on Sylvia and her accomplishments.

Thunderbirds didn’t play in my area growing up, so it wasn’t until I was an adult before I had my first exposure to the Andersons and their amazing worlds.  I’m still a fan to this day…

    Comics! Deep Dive Daredevils

This weekly webcomic has become one of my favorites.  The writing is fresh, fun and top notch and the art really captures that pulp adventure feel.  This is a fun read and I would love to see this animated!

    Get Rickety Rickety ‘Recked, son!

I’m pretty stoked that Rick and Morty will be back in 2016.  This is one of the most subversive, brilliant and utterly insane sci-fi stories told.  It’s humor might be lost on some, but the story lines and plot concepts they introduce are amazing and surreal.  Mix in a dose of cynicism, edgy humor and a way of not taking yourself too seriously and you have the formula for one of my favorite shows.  It took me a bit to get used to the animation style, but the writing and rapid fire dialog just sells the show.

    Fun show, worth a look!

    Radio Cosmos updated

I’ve been a huge “retro wave” for the past couple of years now.  Loved it in the 80’s, and now it’s back with a vengeance!  Down in the sidebar, you will find a link to my latest Radio Cosmos playlist.80's  80sThis is usually what is playing as I’m working on Suzi.  Luckily the wife lived thru the 80’s as well,  big hair and all!  If you have any cool music to share, leave a comment with a link.  I am always on the look out for great grooves!

  • Suzi Radio Drama?

    Suzi Radio Drama?

When I was young, my Dad had a bluegrass radio show in Dallas, and so every Saturday afternoon, my little brother and I would load up the family station wagon with a select mix of my Dad’s personal music collection and we were off to the big city.  I loved visiting the radio station, and on Saturday nights, it was pretty empty.  My brother and I got to know the radio station and it’s sister TV station across the alley very well.

    Suzi Quazar on the air?

My Dad kept a nice audio studio upstairs at our house, so we were exposed to audio engineering at an early age.  We would create our own radio adventures on tape, then laugh as we played them back with sound effects added.

I would like to do something similar with Suzi, and hire a voice actress to read the script, then I would take it and add the music and effects, narration and all that jazz.  I think it would be a lot of fun,  and would give me a chance to include a lot of story material that didn’t make it in the comic.

That sound like anything you guys would want to hear?

  • Very cool!

    Very cool!

So Lewaine told me Saturday that Suzi had been mentioned online, and when we checked it out, we saw that Suzi had been selected as Webcomic of the day at best-webcomic.com.  I gotta say it was pretty cool to see so many people had voted for Suzi.  It’s hard to imagine that more than a few people stop by every week (and sometimes every day!), but almost 3 years later, here we are!

I encourage you to check out the other comic links in the side bar.  You can find some amazing stuff out there!
